Light crude oil is a type of liquid petroleum characterized by its low density and ability to flow freely at room temperature. It has low viscosity, low specific gravity, and high API gravity due to a high proportion of light hydrocarbon fractions, generally with a low wax content. In contrast, heavy crude oil or extra heavy crude oil does not flow easily and is termed “heavy” because its density or specific gravity is higher than that of light crude oil.
